About HEART

What is HEART?

HEART (Hobart Echo Appropriateness Review Tool) is a clinical decision support tool designed to help clinicians at the Royal Hobart Hospital determine the appropriateness of echocardiogram requests based on validated clinical criteria.

This tool assists in assessing:

  • If an echocardiogram is indicated for a specific clinical scenario
  • The appropriate timeframe for the study
  • Whether it should be performed as an inpatient or outpatient
  • If consultation with other specialist teams is recommended

How It Works

HEART uses artificial intelligence to analyse the clinical context and specific question provided by the clinician. It references comprehensive, evidence-based echocardiogram appropriate use criteria to generate recommendations.

The assessment process includes:

  1. Screening against echo inappropriate use criteria
  2. Matching the clinical scenario to validated indications
  3. Determining the appropriate setting and timeframe
  4. Identifying when specialist consultation is needed

Each assessment is assigned a unique case ID for audit and reference purposes.

Important Safety Information

HEART is a clinical guidance tool only and does not replace clinical judgment.

Recommendations are based on validated appropriate use criteria, but should always be evaluated in the context of the individual patient's clinical situation. When in doubt, please discuss with the Cardiology team. The HEART application is fully compliant with APP (Australian Privacy Principles) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) standards, ensuring the secure handling, storage, and transmission of sensitive health information. It is designed to assess common clinical scenarios. Complex cases should be discussed with the Cardiology team. It is important that patient identifiers not be used.

Development

HEART was developed by Dr. Tommy Moran, Cardiology Advanced Trainee at the Royal Hobart Hospital, in collaboration with the Department of Cardiology.
